2026 Election Policy Scorecard
"Our mokopuna are our future, their education and success should be our utmost priority.” - Rahui Papa, Chair, Mātauranga ILG
Mātauranga ILG wants to understand where each political party’s priorities sit on education, and to give whānau a clear, visible picture of those priorities before they vote. The scorecard compares the education policies released by the seven major parties this election season against Mātauranga ILG’s 2026 Election Manifesto and its vision of whānau-led education.
It is designed to help whānau, hapū and the wider community make informed decisions at the ballot box.
What we found
Some parties struggle to put forward policy that reflects the needs of diverse communities. There also remains a lack of meaningful engagement with Māori on many proposed policies. In our view, this is a failure of the Crown to uphold its obligations to Māori.
“Our mokopuna deserve to feel reflected and supported within the New Zealand education system.” - Rahui Papa, Chair, Mātauranga ILG
