He aratohu, understanding school boards

Ānei rā he aratohu e whakamārama ana i te hiranga o te poari o te kura, me ngā taipitopito mo te tū hei māngai.

He aha te poari o te kura?

Ko te poari te rōpū whakahaere matua o te kura, ko ngā māngai o te ohu nei he mātua/kaitiaki, tāngata nō te hapori o te kura, ākonga me ngā kaiako hoki. Ko ōna haepapa he:

  • Kia whakaū i ngā pūmanawa me ngā uara o te ao Māori, e rongo ai ngā ākonga i te hiranga me te ātaahua o tō rātou tuakiri i a rātou i te kura

  • Kua ngū te reo a ngā whānau Māori i ngā poari me ngā āhuatanga whakahaere kura — 20% anake ngā māngai whakapapa Māori

Me pēhea taku tū hei māngai?

  • Mēnā rānei koe he mātua, he kaitiaki, ā, 18+ tau te pakeke

  • Whakakīa te puka tononga ka tukuna e te kura **tērā pea he tukanga motuhake i tō kura, whakapā wawe atu ki a rātou mo ngā taipitopito**

  • Rapua he kaitautoko i tō tono; ānei he tauira

ENGLISH

We are the first kaiako, nurturers and lifelong advocates for our tamariki. One powerful way we can shape their learning is through our involvement as a school board member, as voters, decision-makers, and voices of our hapori and community.

What is a School Board (Board of Trustees, BoT)?
A school board is a group of parents, community members, and school staff who make decisions about how a school is run. They oversee:

  • Budget and school resourcing

  • Principal performance and leadership

  • School policies & strategic direction

  • Ākonga achievement

Why should whānau be involved?

  • Our tamariki deserve culturally strong, safe places of learning

  • Our presence ensures our values are heard

  • School boards need more Māori representation — only 1 in 5 current members are Māori

How can I get involved?

  1. Nominate yourself (or someone you trust) to be on the board **nominations close soon, please contact your kura/school for closing dates**

  2. Vote in the upcoming board elections

  3. Attend board hui at your kura/school

  4. Ask your kura/school what support they provide for ākonga Māori

Whakapapa Decisions – what does that mean?
Our campaign is centred on ‘whakapapa decisions’ as learning is lifelong and our experiences at kura and school are only one part of that learner journey, but the impact on the paths we embark on after we leave cannot be understated. Your decision to engage today can shape the path for your mokopuna for generations to commence.

Need Help?
Ask your local kura, wider whānau or iwi office to support. We’ve created endorsement templates, pātai to ask your kura or school and more rauemi here. You can also visit https://www.tewhakaroputanga.org.nz for more information.
